I need information about...
You had a procedure called prostate brachytherapy. Your doctor inserted many tiny radioactive “seeds” into your prostate. Each seed is smaller than an uncooked grain of rice and contains radioactive material used to kill the cancer. When the seeds become inactive, they will remain within the prostate permanently, but will not harm you. Here’s what you need to do at home following the procedure.
Recovery takes 1-2 days. It is normal to feel tired. Rest as needed.
Drink plenty of fluids for 2 days following your procedure.
Avoid heavy lifting for 2 days after your surgery.
Resume your normal activities beginning 2-3 days after the procedure.
Follow the instructions given to you about straining your urine. Remember: strain your urine for 1 week after the procedure. And if you pass a seed in your urine, pick it up with tweezers and place it in the packet that was given to you before leaving the hospital. Save the packet to give to your doctor at your next visit.
Expect some blood in your urine for a 1-2 days following the surgery.
Expect some burning during urination or ejaculation for 1-2 days after surgery.
Keep at least 6 feet away from children or pregnant women for 2 months following your procedure.
Wear a condom during intercourse for 2 months after the procedure.
Radioactive seeds may set off the airport security system. Ask your doctor for a card or letter that says you have had this procedure so that you can show it to security personnel.
Make a follow-up appointment as directed by our staff.
