Not smoking can reduce the risk for fatal strokes in young and middle-aged adults. A study by the American Stroke Association found that stroke patients ages 18 to 49 who smoked were 3.7 times more likely to have a subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) stroke than nonsmokers. SAH is fatal up to 50 percent of the time.
